While working as an Engineer, Riki Strydom participated in the online course Nano Filtration and Reverse Osmosis in Water Treatment. Read about his experience.
What was your motivation for enrolling in this course?
I’ve been working in the water industry in South Africa for over three years now. During the recent extended drought in the country, people in the industry have started to discuss membrane treatment, and specifically reverse osmosis, for desalination.
The TU Delft course “Nanofiltration and Reverse Osmosis in Water Treatment” offered the ideal opportunity for me to get an introduction into this process and to assist with basic design and implementation of systems here.
How would you describe your online learning experience?
During the course I have learned to apply membranes to various applications. I now understand the physical characteristic of the different membranes and I can calculate different scenarios for the modeling and implementation of a reverse osmosis water treatment plant.
What did you think of the online learning environment?
The lecturers are very knowledgeable in their fields and the video lectures are a great way to understand the material. Videos of excursions to industrial sites help to make a connection between the studies of the literature and operational plants. Forums are used to share knowledge and assist each other with the course content and assignments. Also, they provide the opportunity for networking and meeting people from all over the world in the same industry.
I would encourage everyone to enroll for this course. I’m very much looking forward to seeing what other courses are available through TU Delft!
