"I would strongly recommend the course and the learning environment to any engineering professional looking for distance learning."
While working as a Civil & Structural Engineer, Tim Lohmann participated in the online course Fiber Reinforced Polymer (FRP) Composites in Structural Engineering. Read about his experience.
What was your motivation for enrolling in the course? And has the course had any impact on your day-to-day work, career, etc.?
My role has become more management and leadership focussed and I was missing hard technical challenges. As part of my CPD we identified that the TU Delft courses offered an interesting range of topics across the spectrum of engineering activity. I elected to take the FRP course as I am interested in the application of new materials and technology across the field and it would give me a mid-career return to technical thought.
How would you describe your online learning experience?
My expectations were for a course around long lectures, coursework and a closing exam. In reality the course delivered far more – the short lectures with complementary notes, allied with the strong focus on group work – and I’d strongly recommend the course as being engaging, fast paced and demanding. There were challenges with getting the group to work together when we were in different countries and with different priorities, however these were overcome. The support from the academic team was first class. I will certainly be looking at further courses with TU Delft.
What did you think of the online learning environment?
I found the on-line environment easy to use and intuitive. The pattern of reading, lecture, coursework works well and the progressive unlocking of the content was helpful in pacing the learning. There was good support from the team and the range of lecturers was first class – with speakers from academia and industry combining well. The deadlines on the group-work often crept up and we didn’t do well as a team in this. Lots of late Sunday nights!
What is your advice to someone who would like to take a similar online course?
This was a first class course, delivered in a professional and stimulating way. There was good engagement with the teaching team. I would strongly recommend the course and the learning environment to any engineering professional looking for distance learning.
