Riding Towards Safety: Engineering and Human Factors Shaping Food Delivery Safety
Rider safety is more than just following traffic rules. Behind every quick delivery lies a complex system of logistics and human elements. This webinar looks at the growing presence of this new group of road users – delivery drivers – and how their presence and behaviours affect road traffic, safety and other users, and what factors, for example pressure to meet delivery schedules/quotas or use of easily modified bikes (such as fatbikes), play a role in safety.
This webinar explores two critical dimensions of food delivery riders’ safety:
Engineering and Operational Aspects – Discussing the role of optimized route planning, logistics, and emerging technologies in ensuring safe and efficient delivery systems. | |
Social and Human Factors Perspective – Examining rider safety behaviors, adherence to protocols, and the societal influences shaping risk and safety management. |
TU Delft’s cutting-edge research uniquely addresses these challenges by integrating engineering innovation with a deep understanding of human behavior. Participants will gain a comprehensive socio-technical perspective on enhancing safety in the evolving food delivery sector.

Speakers:
Dr. Oscar Oviedo Trespalacios
Oscar Oviedo-Trespalacios is an assistant professor in Responsible Risk Management. His research and teaching covers the tensions between safety and sustainable development issues such as equity, fair work, and climate action. He has achieved international recognition in preventing the misuse of technology (e.g., mobile phone use while cycling and driving). In 2019, He received the Australasian College of Road Safety’s Inaugural Young Leaders Oration Award in recognition of my impact and reputation in distracted driving research. His research has been widely reported in international media, including ABC, the New York Times, the Independent, the Men’s Health Magazine, and the Washington Post.
Dr. Yousef Maknoon
Yousef Maknoon is an Associate Professor at the Faculty of Technology, Policy and Management at Delft University of Technology and the Co-director of Operations Research and Behavioral Informatic (ORBIT) Lab at TPM. His research focuses on developing methodological tools to design and plan logistics and transport systems.
