While working as an Environmental Engineer, Amir participated in the online course High-Rate Anaerobic Wastewater Treatment.

What was your motivation for enrolling in this course/program? 
I very much wanted to attend this course from TU Delft for different reasons. First, I wanted to expand my knowledge in wastewater treatment technology with the novel anaerobic digestion. Second, when I knew the course was going to be delivered by this renowned institution, I was certainly not going to miss that chance. Third, the university offered financial assistance which helped me to join the course considering the situation that my country, Sudan, is going through. I am grateful for this opportunity.

How did/will this course impact your career or life? 
It is clear to many people that a large number of cities and towns in the southern hemisphere lack basic urban wastewater treatment infrastructure. When I decided to take the course, I knew that this could also be an advantage or offer the potential to engage in small-scale decentralized energy generation opportunities, especially for Africa. That can only be achieved if proper technology transfer shall take place from the renowned researchers, such as TU Delft and their partner technology innovators, and collaboratively they can form the cornerstone needed for such breakthrough.

How was your experience learning online?
I was personally sad to have lost my beloved father Dr. Osman Albashir five days prior to the start of the course. Nevertheless, with the strong grit to thrive that he always instilled in us and the support of my family, I thankfully enjoyed a worthwhile learning experience while adhering to the needed coursework. I am grateful to the course team for providing the right course material and for setting an interactive online platform that can assist in delivering the desired results.

What advice would you give someone who is thinking of taking a similar course?
The course is a must for wastewater professionals in this era of climate challenges and the journey is indeed an unforgettable experience, opening the door for a whole new set of opportunities. The course is a true gamechanger and a credential that I would love to carry from TU Delft.
