The CrowdStrike incident in the summer of 2024, which caused widespread disruptions to computer systems worldwide, was due to a faulty update. However, its implications extend far beyond just that software - there are valuable lessons here for any organization dealing with risk management, big or small. 

Most importantly, the incident has underscored the critical need for robust risk management strategies and processes to effectively handle such crises. It also highlighted the importance of swift and effective responses in areas such as business continuity, supply chain risk, reputation management, and communication. 

In response to this critical incident, the leaders of the Risk Management Summer Course, Rinske Geerlings and Prof. Sicco Santema, have designed a unique half-day workshop, on TU Delft’s campus, specifically for risk professionals. This workshop offers an in-depth reflection on the CrowdStrike incident, providing insights and key takeaways that you can immediately apply in your work.  

During the workshop, the following discussion points will be addressed:  

• What lessons have been learned in terms of crisis response? 
• The importance of business continuity options, particularly in communication, when your usual tools (PCs) are not functioning. 
• What is required for reputation management in situations like these? 
• What dependency risks are introduced by the (digital) supply chain? 
• Where does insurance fit in? Who bears the cost of such a disaster, or is it considered a force majeure?  
• How does this affect the continuous availability of critical IT services? (including a reflection on ISO 27001 and the new DORA standard in the EU.)
