During this course, which consists of 5 modules plus a getting started module, you will work through a five-step career-thinking model reflecting on your unique experiences, attitudes and strengths. You will define your current career challenge, explore different solutions and walk away with a validated and tailored role that inspires and motivates you.
In this course you will:
- Review your career to date to identify your strengths and potential.
- Define your current career challenges.
- Receive expert and peer advice on potential solutions to your career challenges.
- Experiment with ideas to tackle your career challenges and conduct searches to identify a list of target companies and roles that best suit your career aspirations.
- Validate your preferred role and test this option so you can make an informed decision.
- Create an action plan to actualise your next career move.
By the end of this course, you will be able to:

Module 0: Welcome and course introduction
Introduction to the course team, content, processes and most importantly, your fellow participants.
Module 1: Taking stock
Introduction to differentiating engineering roles and an opportunity to take stock of the key elements of your professional identity and determine your potential for growth.
Module 2: Defining your career challenges
Define the career challenges you'd like to address and describe your life if the challenges are satisfactorily resolved.
Module 3: Ideas time!
Several minds are always better than one when solving a challenge. With a team of collaborators, you will share your career challenges and create a list of potential solutions.
Module 4: Validate your preferred role
This module encourages you to evaluate potential options and conceptualise your future roles. You will create a prototype of your personal profile for positioning yourself in the market and get advice on how to research roles and companies.
Module 5: Test drive and action plan
You will test drive your preferred options and learn tips on maintaining commitment to realising your next career move by making an action plan.
Assignments & Assessments
The course includes self-assessments, hands-on activities, reflective exercises and quizzes to check your learning, as well as team discussions and online hangouts, where you can learn from and give support to other participants. Teaming up with professional peers is an essential element of the model as it offers feedback and networking opportunities to validate your choice and achieve your goals.
This course includes three types of assessments:
- Quiz at the end of each module to check learning
- A checklist at the end of each module to confirm activities completed
- Submit an action plan for staff review
